Prof. Dr. Moritz Schmelzle, Head of the Transplant Centre at the MHH, presented a new surgical procedure he has developed for partial liver resection at a press conference on May 21, 2025.
I was commissioned by Prof. Schmelzle to create four illustrations for this, two of which I am allowed to show here. "Worldwide unique intervention in Hannover", was the headline in BILD-Zeitung, "MHH saves 62-year-old's life" wrote the Hannoversche Allgemeine, and RTL Nord broadcasted a report on the press conference, where the illustrations were also shown.
The central point of the procedure is that two perfusion circuits were set up: one using ECMO to bypass the liver, and a second using VitaSmart for in vivo perfusion of the liver with hypothermic HTK solution. A scientific publication describing the new procedure including all four illustrations is in preparation.
